For the most part, cruise ships have always been casual attire during the day and required passengers to dress appropriately at dinner. 10 years ago, many ships required Formal Attire for almost all dinners and certain activities. Now, the majority of cruise ships have transititioned to the times.
Day-Time Dress:
As earlier mentioned, during the day, you are free to wear just about anything. Shorts, T-shirts, sandels are common attire one will see when walking around the ship during the day. Keep in mind, the dress is usually up to the individual and the attire you see will vary depending on the type of boat you are on. Carnival prides itself on being the "Fun Ship". If you are on one of these ships, you will find that people dress confortably.
Night-Time Dress:
Dinner has always been the question on everyone's mind when it comes to the dress code. Here are a few tips to remember when you take a cruise.
For Casual Dinners: Men should wear Slacks and sport shirt (Should Not Wear Jeans); Women should wear a sundress or slacks and blouse.
For Informal Dinners: Mes should wear a Jacket with or without tie and women should wear a dress or pantsuit.
For Formal Dinners: A dark suit or tuxedo is the suggested dress for men. Keep in mind, a nice suit will do just fine (to avoid the needed expense for a tuxedo). Women are expected to wear a nice evening gown or cocktail dress.
The number of Formal dinners usually depend on the length of cruise you take. For a 3-4 night cruise, there will usually be one formal night. For a 7 night cruise, there are usually 2 formal nights. If you plan on cruising for an extended time, 10 days or more, you will usually have 3 or more formal nights.
A rule of thumb is: the more expensive cruises you take will have the most formal nights. keep in mind that ALL cruise ships vary. It is best to call your travel agent or the cruise ship company before you leave for exact information.
